R-22

Definition
R-22 is a common refrigerant used in home AC systems. Since 2004, its production and use has declined because of bans over concerns of its toxicity and environmental effects. Since 2020, use of R-22 in the US must rely on recycled or stockpiled quantities. Several older-model home ACs still run on this refrigerant, so many homeowners either replace or retrofit the system.
