R-12

Definition
R-12 was a common type of refrigerant used in home AC units. It was created by Kinetic Chemicals in the 1930s, but its production was banned in 1996 due to toxicity and environmental concerns. Many older model AC systems still run on this refrigerant. Since its ban, the cost of R-12 has skyrocketed. So for many homeowners, replacing the entire system is the best course of action.
