R-12

Close up of a container of R-12 refrigerant

Definition

R-12 was a common type of refrigerant used in home AC units. It was created by Kinetic Chemicals in the 1930s, but it’s production was banned in 1996 because of toxicity and environmental concerns. Many older model AC systems still run on this refrigerant. Since its ban the cost of R-12 has skyrocketed. So for many homeowners, it’s best to replace the system.
